Félix Vallotton
I cannot deny that I now find myself writing about one of my absolute favourite artists.
The format of this page prevents me from telling you some of the stories about the life of this figure, a mysterious artist of a thousand talents who captivates us with his clean drawings and lines full of truth.
Félix Vallotton, an artist who defies labels, was born in Lausanne, in French-speaking Switzerland, in 1865, and moved to Paris when barely sixteen.
His style is many-sided, his character often surly and irritable. Disinclined to follow the currents of his time, his works range from oil paintings of dreamlike, solitary landscapes (with faintly Expressionist colours) to magnificent black-and-white woodcut illustrations for newspapers and various publications.

In each of his works, honest and often a little brazen, we can grasp the sense of bewilderment of modern man, the unspoken vices and the controversies of civilisation.
The play of volumes obtained from the black and white of engraving and woodcut is without doubt among the most successful in Vallotton’s work.
