Henri Matisse
“There is a design common to all things: plants, trees, animals, people; and it is with this design that one must be in harmony”
Henri Matisse
Henri Matisse, born in 1869 in Le Cateau-Cambrésis in northern France, is considered one of the most brilliant and prolific protagonists of twentieth-century art.
Set on the path of law studies as a boy, he soon realised his true vocation: painting. Barely thirty, he moved to Paris, where he studied at the Académie Julian and at the École des Beaux-Arts as a pupil of Gustave Moreau, the Symbolist and Orientalist painter.
Over a long and successful life, he made colour his primary language of expression. He joined the Fauves in the early 1900s, then developed over the years a wholly personal style, with pure and effective lines, based first and foremost on line and colour.
